BRIGHTER FUTURES, BRIGHTER SMILES

The Web
Madison County HD

We are pleased to announce our newest initiative Brighter Futures, Brighter Smiles, a dental health program for the Madison County and Berea Community public school systems. Our mission is to improve and promote oral health through education and preventative care. During the 2006-2007 school year, we began a dental sealant program for second graders. Sealants are plastic coatings placed on the back teeth to prevent tooth decay. The process involves a screening performed by a local dentist and sealant placement by the MCHD registered dental hygienist. This is a free service for any second grade student. As part of our oral hygiene program, third grade students who had received sealants in second grade will have a dental screening to evaluate the sealant and have fluoride varnish. For more information regarding this program, please contact Marsha G. Deaton, RDH, at the Madison County Health Department, (859) 626-4511.

2009-2010 Fluoride Varnish Program

The Madison County Health Department initiated a Fluoride Varnish program for the Kindergarten students of Madison County in the 2007-2008 school year. This is a free preventative service. Fluoride varnish helps to prevent tooth decay. A dental assessment is performed before the varnish is applied. If dental needs are noted, a referral is made. Each child receives a toothbrush and toothpaste as well as oral education. It is an easy, painless procedure applied in the classroom by a RN twice during the year. Fluoride varnish is also a component of the dental sealant program. Expansion of dental services in 2008-2009 include fluoride varnish for the third grade and the addition of fluoride varnish in the fifth grade physical.
